Na een ruzie met zijn ouders tijdens hun bezoek in Rusland, loopt Indiana Jones weg. Op het Russische platteland ontmoet hij Lev Tolstoj die ook is weggelopen en Indiana gezelschap houdt. Later, in Griekenland, ontmoet Indiana Jones de schrijver Nikos Kazantzakis.
